Is Fixed Wire Testing a Legal Requirement?

Fixed Wire Testing is the procedure you have carried out to maintain your electrical installation, so it’s not a legal requirement itself but if you don’t have one then you’re not maintaining your electrical installation and are therefore not legally compliant.
It’s a little confusing, but the long and short of it is: you are legally bound to be compliant.

You will also need an up to date report to comply with the following regulations –

  • Health & Safety at Work Act 1974
  • Management of Health & Safety at Work Regulations 1999
  • Electricity at Work Regulations 1989
  • Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992.

Your buildings insurance will also be invalid without an up to date report.

What we do:

Fixed Wire Testing involves testing and inspecting the electrical installations or circuits within a building. This test covers all of the electrical wiring in a building including the main panels, distribution boards, lighting, socket outlets, air conditioning etc.

Following a visual appraisal and verification of the whole electrical installation the following test procedures are applied where appropriate, in order to ascertain the safety of the electrical installation:

Continuity – to ascertain that the earthing is continuous throughout the circuit.
Bonding Conductors Continuity – to ensure bonding is in place and effective.
Ring Circuit Continuity – ascertains whether or not the ring is complete.
Insulation Resistance – to test whether there has been any breakdown in insulation to the installation.
Polarity – to check that the installation is correctly wired.
Earth Fault Loop Impedance – to ascertain the Zs of the installation.
Earth Electrode Resistance – applies to TT systems only, to test the earthing rods.
RCD Testing – to check that Residual Current Device disconnects the supply in the event of a fault.
Functional Testing of Isolators and Breakers – to ensure that they disconnect the supply.

On completion of the testing a full NICEIC / NAPIT report will be issued highlighting any remedial work that may be required. We can then offer you a quote for the work required or you are completely free to use whoever you choose to carry this out.

This ensures complete transparency in our testing.

Please note fixed wire testing does not refer to the equipment which is wired into spur sockets or isolators. This refers to Fixed Equipment testing.
